ARCTIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Whether it's a rafting adventure you're looking for, or some of the most ultimate wildlife viewing in Alaska, the Kongakut River drainage has it all. It is possible to raft, hike and view as many as 8 different wild mammals in 7-10 days, and a multitude of migratory birds!

Caribou, Moose, Grizzly Bear, Dall Sheep, Wolves, Musk Oxen, Fox, Arctic Ground Squirrels

The Kongakut River is the north-eastern-most river in Alaska. The Arctic Char fish fight real hard and the Arctic Grayling are pretty big up there. It's got to be one of the most beautiful places on earth, with all the wildlife you can imagine. One time I hiked up this dry creek, and what I saw just amazed me. It was a wall-to-wall blue of Lupine flowers. That's the place where the caribou just come walking through your camp en-route to the coastal plains. It's the most awesome hiking and, of course, one could literally hike up one of the mountains on the north side of the river late at night, and watch the sun slowly glide along the horizon....relenting to descend. I challenge you to tell me where I can find a place better than this! The rocks along the river are all colors, too, pink, green, blue, purple. Imagine going to sleep to the sound of the rocks rolling down the river in the loud gurgle of swift water....add the occasional sound of a small herd on hoofs clomping on the rocks as they kick and glide past your tent....and drift off to never-never-land to the howl of a lone black wolf across the river. You'd never regret or forget an experience like the Kongakut River for the rest of your life!                Dawn Foster
